Digital platform brings Oaxaca’s mezcal trail online

Oaxaca’s state tourism board has announced a new digital upgrade for the Ruta Caminos del Mezcal, the famed mezcal heritage tour through the Central Valleys. The Caminos del Mezcal spans towns like Mitla, Matatlán, Tlacolula and others, a corridor known for traditional agave distilleries. The digital trail guides aim to transform this physical route into an interactive experience.

Officials say the guides will include interactive maps of distilleries and sights, historical and cultural background on mezcal traditions, practical information on tasting rooms, lodging, and travel itineraries. Visitors can expect multimedia content like photos, audio commentary, and video, all accessible by mobile device.

What tourists can expect

These guides will offer key benefits to travelers. Navigation tools will help plan visits to palenques with details like driving times, parking, and BinniBus shuttle stops. The system is expected to support multiple languages and offline downloads for remote areas.

Visitors will receive real-time information about hours, pricing, and contact details for each mezcal producer and cultural stop. The platform will also highlight events such as the annual Feria del Mezcal and allow for custom trip itineraries.

The digital guide project is scheduled to launch in phases. A pilot version will debut by late 2025, with a full rollout anticipated by mid-2026. Content will be updated regularly based on traveler feedback and local input.

While the official platform name has not been announced, it is expected to be integrated into the Oaxaca state tourism portal or compatible with existing mobile mapping tools.

Stakeholder support and local impact

The program is led by Sectur Oaxaca under Secretary Saymi Pineda Velasco. In May 2025, the government formed the Comité de la Ruta Caminos del Mezcal with participation from seven Central Valley municipalities.

“This route aims to generate greater visitor flow nationally and internationally, resulting in direct economic benefits for producers, artisans, tourism workers, and families,” Pineda Velasco said at the project’s launch in Mitla.

Rogelio Hernández Sernas, municipal president of Santiago Matatlán, described the new digital tools as “a key step in unlocking the region’s tourism potential.” Other leaders from Mitla, Tlacolula, and Tule are also supporting the effort with local content and coordination.
