Oaxaca’s most cherished cultural celebration, the Guelaguetza 2025, returns this July with two main events on July 21 and 28, known as the famous Lunes del Cerro. Held at the Auditorio Guelaguetza atop Cerro del Fortín, this spectacular showcase brings together over 50 community delegations from across the state to share their dances, music, and traditions in a vibrant expression of indigenous heritage.

Morning (10:00 AM) and afternoon (5:00 PM) performances are scheduled on both Mondays, featuring colorful costumes, live music, and folk dances that have been passed down for generations. With breathtaking views of the city as a backdrop, the event is more than a performance—it’s a living celebration of Oaxaca’s diversity and unity.

Tickets, Seating, and Access

While all paid seats for the main auditorium sold out within minutes of going on sale June 2, visitors still have options. Free seating is available in sections C and D, but you’ll need to arrive early—lines begin before sunrise. These upper bleacher seats still offer excellent views and an unforgettable atmosphere. For many, the early wake-up call is worth it.

New for 2025: Solidarity and World Records

In an inspiring move, organizers have pledged that all proceeds from the festival’s ticket sales—alongside funds from the concurrent Mezcal Fair—will be donated to Oaxacan coastal communities affected by Hurricane Erick. This gives the celebration a deeper purpose beyond its already rich traditions.

Just days before the first show, Oaxaca made headlines by setting a new Guinness World Record: the world’s largest traditional dance circle. Over 2,400 dancers from all corners of the state gathered on the Fortín esplanade in full regalia to celebrate unity, history, and joy in motion.

Planning Your Visit

  • Arrive at the auditorium early—well before sunrise if aiming for free seats.
  • Bring sun protection, water, and a cushion or light blanket for bleacher seating.
  • Pair your visit with other Guelaguetza events like the Mezcal Fair and artisan markets.
  • Use public transport or walk to the venue—streets around the hill will be closed.
  • Consider alternative shows held throughout the city if you miss the main days.

More than a show, Guelaguetza is a spirit. It’s the generosity of giving without expecting in return, a dance offered to your neighbor, a song sung for your grandmother’s memory. Whether you have a ticket or not, just being in Oaxaca during Guelaguetza is something you’ll never forget.
