Venturing by Second Class Bus

The second class bus offers the most affordable ride at around MX$25 one way. These green and white vehicles depart frequently every 15 to 30 minutes from early morning around 6 until about 9 in the evening. You can board at the Central de Abastos near the main market or flag one down along Highway 190. I recommend finding your way to the baseball stadium for a less chaotic start.

Expect a 1 hour journey on a basic coach that may get crowded with locals and vendors. Pay in cash preferrably with coins or with small bills upon boarding. Ask the driver to drop you at the ruins junction to save a walk or continue to Mitla town center and take a short moto taxi for MX$10 to MX$20 (per person). This option immerses you in daily Oaxacan life making locals smile as you join their routine.

Choosing a Colectivo Shared Ride

For a slightly faster trip opt for a colectivo taxi  costing MX$35 to MX$40. These depart from the Central de Abastos when full every 10 to 20 minutes but I don’t recommend going there. Wait for them by the baseball stadium as well it’s much less hectic and a lot safer. They run from 6 in the morning to around 9 at night. All collectivo taxis are like this dark red/burgundy color but you can distinguish the Mitla taxis from the other collectivo taxis because the Mitla colectivos have a large navy blue stripe on both sides.

The ride lasts 40 to 50 minutes with fewer stops.  You will arrive in Mitla town center, a short walk or moto taxi from the ruins, feeling the communal warmth that defines Oaxacan travel.

Hiring a Private Taxi

A private taxi provides direct comfort for MX$400 to MX$600 one way or MX$250 to MX$300 per hour for a round trip. Negotiate with a driver from a sitio stand or through your hotel for a 45 minute journey door to door. This suits groups splitting costs or those seeking flexibility to stop en route.

Enjoy air conditioning and space for luggage with the driver waiting if you hire for the day. Locals often serve as informal guides sharing stories that enrich your visit. For night travel this remains your reliable choice operating beyond public transport hours.

Driving with a Rental Car

Renting a car grants freedom for about MX$600 per day including insurance. Follow Highway 190 east for a 40 to 50 minute drive passing towns like Santa Maria del Tule. Agencies at the airport or city center provide options with parking available at the ruins.

This suits explorers wanting to linger or add stops though avoid night driving for safety. You will savor the independence navigating at your pace connecting deeply with the landscapes that inspire Oaxacan pride.

Navigating Night and Seasonal Travels

Public options end around 9 in the evening so for late travels rely on taxis possibly with a night premium. Early mornings start at 6. During peaks like Day of the Dead or Guelaguetza book tours ahead as crowds swell. Sundays see busier rides due to Tlacolula market yet offer vibrant stops.

Rainy season from May to September brings lush greens and afternoon showers while dry months offer clear skies. You will find Oaxacas spirit shines year round inviting you to adapt and embrace each seasons charm.

Practical Tips for Every Traveler

Carry small peso bills for cash only fares and confirm prices before boarding. Leave large luggage at your hotel as space is limited on public rides. Families might prefer taxis for comfort while solo adventurers thrive on buses mingling with locals.

If you decide to take a private taxi you can often ask them for their phone number so they can come back for you at a certain time. Taxi drivers usually love this because they can make their whole day’s pay with just one trip instead of driving around looking for or waiting for fares so don’t be shy to ask. Even colectivo drivers are more than willing to make what they call a “Viaje especial”. You can ask them, “¿Hace usted viajes especiales?” and then go from there.
