How to Get to Tlacolula and its Colorful Indigenous Market

The Tlacolula Sunday Market is one of Oaxaca’s most vibrant and authentic experiences

Welcome to Tlacolula. From a Local Who Lives Here

I live right here in Tlacolula and I am always happy to see visitors make the trip out from Oaxaca City. Our town is small, friendly, and full of real Oaxacan life. The main reason most people come is our famous Sunday market. I can tell you honestly that it is truly awesome. Every week the streets fill with color, the smell of fresh tortillas and grilled meat, and the sound of vendors calling out their best deals on textiles, pottery, and local produce. It is not a tourist trap. It is a working market where locals shop too. If you love authentic Oaxaca, this is one of the best places to experience it.

The Best and Fastest Way. Colectivo Taxis from Oaxaca City

For most visitors coming from Oaxaca City, the best and fastest option is the colectivo taxi. These shared vans run all along the Periferico and Eduardo Vasconcelos. I always tell people to avoid the main terminal at Central de Abastos. It is crowded and not the nicest place to wait. Instead, catch the colectivo further down the road.

The best spot is right in front of Chedraui by 5 Señores. If the van is already full when the driver arrives, he goes straight along Avenida Ferrocarril and you skip all the heavy traffic around the baseball stadium that has been bad lately.

The current price is $35 pesos per person. The drive is usually about 25 minutes with no traffic and around 35 minutes when there is traffic. Try to grab a seat in the back. Drivers often put three people in the front, including themselves, and it gets uncomfortable very quickly. The back is much more spacious.

Bus Option from Oaxaca City

If you want to save a little money and do not mind taking longer, you can catch a regular bus for $25 pesos. It also leaves from the general area along the Periferico. The ride takes about an hour, twice as long as the colectivo, but it is often more comfortable if you get a seat. It is not my personal favorite when I need to go into the city, but it works fine for visitors who are not in a hurry.

Private Transportation from Oaxaca City

For the most comfortable and convenient experience, many visitors hire a private driver from Oaxaca City. Prices usually run $2500 to $3000 pesos for the round trip. The driver picks you up at your hotel or Airbnb, brings you straight here, waits while you explore the market, and takes you back whenever you are ready. It is the most expensive option, but it removes all the stress and lets you really enjoy the day.

What to Expect Once You Arrive. Our Market

Once you are here, the Tlacolula Sunday Market is the main attraction and it really is special. The energy is fantastic with rows and rows of colorful textiles, beautiful pottery, fresh vegetables, fragrant moles, and some of the best street food in the region. Locals come from all over the valley to shop here, so you are getting the real thing, not something staged for tourists. I always recommend taking your time, trying the food stalls where the tlayudas are excellent, and chatting with the vendors. They are friendly and happy to tell you about what they make.

The market is at its biggest and most vibrant on Sundays, but you can still find good things on other days too. Bring cash in small bills and wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking a lot.

Local Tips for a Great Visit

  • Come on a Sunday if your schedule allows. That is when the full market happens and the town feels most alive.
  • Start early in the morning for the best selection and to avoid the biggest crowds.
  • Try the local food. Everything is fresh and made with love.
  • Take photos respectfully and support the vendors directly.
  • If you are buying textiles or ceramics, look around first. Quality and prices vary.

A Local’s Invitation

I live here in Tlacolula and I can tell you that our market is something special. It is colorful, delicious, and full of real community spirit. Whether you come by colectivo, bus, or private driver, the trip from Oaxaca City is always worth it. Once you walk through the stalls and taste the food, you will understand why so many of us who live here are proud of it.

Safe travels and enjoy your time in Tlacolula. We are glad to have you.
